Mission & Vison

Parent Company is an artist-run exhibition space founded in 2023 by Ada Potter. The project’s goal is to support artists through exhibition opportunities, public programs, and events. Parent Company seeks to foster a community of artists and art workers and facilitate a dynamic dialogue around art that is fundamentally inclusive and supportive. The project aims to redraw the boundaries around art to include more space, more people, and more ways of thinking and talking about art.

Parent Company envisions a contemporary art ecosystem that is inclusive, experimental, and continually renewed by emerging and underrepresented artists. We believe artist-run spaces are essential cultural infrastructure. We provide opportunities for artists to take risks and present ambitious new work. By supporting artists at pivotal moments in their careers, we help ensure that New York's cultural landscape remains creatively vibrant.

About

What began as an experimental project housed in a shipping container in Downtown Brooklyn has since evolved into a multi-floor exhibition space in Lower Manhattan. This growth reflects both the needs of the artists we serve and our belief that artists require sustained access to space, resources, and community in order to take risks and produce ambitious new work.

Parent Company was founded in response to the pressing conditions within New York City's cultural landscape. Artists increasingly face significant financial and logistical barriers to producing and presenting new work. Rising costs of living and shrinking opportunities have made it difficult for many artists, particularly those early in their careers or working outside of commercially viable forms, to realize ambitious projects. As galleries close and arts funding contracts, artist-run spaces have become increasingly essential cultural infrastructure. Parent Company addresses these needs by creating a platform where artists can develop new work and where the public can experience free, thought-provoking cultural programming.

Parent Company plays a vital role within New York's larger art ecosystem by supporting artists at pivotal moments in their careers. We frequently provide artists with their first solo exhibitions and champion projects that are experimental, site-responsive, interdisciplinary, and less commercially viable. These opportunities are critical to the long-term health of the cultural sector. Without organizations willing to invest in emerging voices and ambitious experimentation, the artistic landscape becomes less diverse, less dynamic, and less vital.

Our programming is guided by a clear curatorial vision centered on process, experimentation, and community. We seek out artists whose work challenges dominant narratives, explores urgent social and political questions, and expands how art can be experienced and understood. We believe contemporary art should be accessible and that audiences benefit from encountering work which provokes curiosity, dialogue, and new ways of thinking.
